East Valley High School, along with other schools in the CWAC league, is participating in an annual event called
"CWAC Coaches vs Cancer". Coaches vs Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
We are selling t-shirts for $11 and $13 (depending on the size). The order form is attached, and all orders are due by January 16th. The t-shirts will be worn by all members of our basketball teams, coaches, cheerleaders and band members. We would also love to fill the stands with our fans wearing these shirts. The shirts are pink with black lettering. Checks can be made payable to East Valley High School.
The night of the basketball game we will also be offering a catered meal from a local restaurant in the Commons, so you can come to the game and have dinner as well. We are firming up the date of the fundraiser and it will be either Friday, February 3rd or Tuesday, February 7th. As soon as the date is set, I will send that information out.
We are looking for donations to pay for the shirts for the teams, cheer squad and band members. If you'd like to donate, please contact me or make checks payable to East Valley High School and mail to my attention at 1900 Beaudry Road, Yakima, WA 98901.
All proceeds from the shirt sale and dinner will be donated to North Star Lodge Cancer Care Services. Last year was our first year with this fundraiser and we raised $1,716.00 for North Star. Hopefully, we can significantly raise that amount this year.
Cancer has touched the lives of many of our community members, staff and students in the East Valley School District. We would appreciate your help in the fight against this disease.

HALLOWEEN FUN!
East Valley's FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) club and Child Development class sponsored the annual community Halloween carnival and haunted house at the high school on Wednesday, October 26. The students spent approximately two weeks getting set up for the event. Every activity was free for the community with the exception of pictures and the haunted house that charged a nominal donation to help off-set expenses. The commons area housed over 15 games and activities. There was even a costume contest for the different age groups.
Free snacks made by the foods and nutrition students were available as well as free candy and prizes handed out at the various games. Face painting, coloring contest, cake walk, fish pond are just some of the fun children participated in. The haunted house was constructed in Dr. LaBeau's classroom and was successful in adding enough fright and fun to keep everyone (who dared enter) entertained. There were over 150 in attendance and fun for all. The students that participated did an excellent job of decorating and 'manning' the activities. A big thank you shout goes out to all who stayed for the clean-up as well. If you missed the fun, FCCLA sponsors a community Easter Egg Hunt in the spring. Join us!
JROTC ON THE MOVE
There are many important upcoming events for JROTC cadets. Firstly, we have the Josh Stahl Service Learning Project. The cadets sold cotton candy and painted faces for a dollar on October 28th, 2011, at the homecoming football game. Next on the calendar is the Veteran's Day Assembly and Parade. The JROTC cadets will be conducting the Assembly on November 10th, 2011, during connections. The following day on the 11th of November will be the Veteran's Day Parade. The cadets will need to be at the High School at 8 am and in their class "A" uniforms. The Parade will be starting approximately at 10:45 am.
FFA FAIR EXHIBIT EARNS COMMUNITY PRIDE
East Valley High's FFA has had a busy September. Since the start of school, 78 members have joined. All agriculture classes worked, in one way or another, on the horticulture display for this year's Central Washington State Fair. Students worked together to research a theme and use it to educate the public, judged produce quality, and discovered ways to display it attractively.
"EAST VALLEY'S FARE - IT'S IN THE AIR" earned a first place award out of 12 entries. According to Agriculture teacher Steve Tjarnberg, "Especially pleasing about this year's booth is the community effort that went into it. We had contributions from all parts of the East Valley community," he says. "It is special that so many people take pride in our FFA activities. We had donations ranging from fruit and canned goods to gourds, squash, and a tiny tractor collection. Our thanks goes to the many people who helped us out," says Mr. Tjarnberg.
COUNSELOR CORNER
National Honor Society is hosting the annual Canned Food Drive thru the Connections classes. The donations will be donated to the East Valley Pantry sponsored by East Valley Reformed Church to benefit our local community. The class that donates the most food (based on weight) will earn a free pizza party. If our school donates 4000 lbs of food, EVHS will earn a spring dance.
