STUDENT/COUNSELOR CONFERENCES:

Parents are encouraged to schedule appointments with counselors to discuss academic status, post-graduation plans, career planning, etc. In addition, counselors will be providing similar information to students within the classrooms and in small groups on a regular basis to prepare students for the world of work.

SUPPORT GROUPS:

A variety of support groups are available to students. Being a teenager in these tough times is difficult. With so many other concerns to worry about, it is no wonder that so many adolescents can not focus on their schoolwork. Support groups provide a safe place for teens to brainstorm solutions for their concerns, develop trusting friendships, and ultimately enhance their academic success by curbing the worries they have been carrying into their classrooms. If you would like to join a support group, refer a student, or merely ask a question about support groups, please call on of the counselors listed above. We would love to talk to you!

CAREER TESTING:

Part of making sound decisions requires a great amount of thought and personal exploration. In an attempt to provide students with as much insightful and valuable vocational information as possible, the Guidance Center has invested in a variety of career assessments to be used with students at various grade levels.

FOUR YEAR PLANS:

During conferences scheduled for incoming freshman, "Four Year Plans" will be developed to assist students in making necessary class choices to meet graduation requirements as well as college and technical school prerequisites. These "Four Year Plans" serve as guides during class registration and are updated as necessary.

PROGRESS REPORTS:

are available online. Call our office if you need your child's password.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

Throughout the year, scholarships information and applications are available to students who desire some sort of educational training after high school. Most of these scholarships are geared to current seniors: however, there are some scholarships available to all grade levels. A current listing of all scholarships sent to our school is posted on the bulletin board in the counseling office. Simply ask for a scholarship list, and mark it for applications to which you are eligible. There are many scholarships that are not sent to the high schools for advertising. To prioritize scholarship applications:

1. Complete applications for the schools to which you are applying. 2. Complete local scholarships. See your counselor for updated lists. 3. Check professional affiliations, unions, groups your parents may be affiliated with. 4. Try an Internet scholarship search.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:

Counselors and teachers are often asked to write recommendations for awards, scholarships, employment, etc. We will be honored to do this; yet there are a couple of tips we ask you to consider so that we are able to write the best possible recommendation. 1. Please allow 2-3 weeks for a person to complete the letter. Last minute requests are nearly impossible to do. 2. Take a few moments to fill out a "Letter of Recommendation" form. They are available from Mrs. Rhynes and provide the writer with specific information to include in writing a strong recommendation.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES:

Referrals to various community services can be made by guidance counselors. Many times, parents and students find themselves in circumstances that they are not able to manage without help. Counselors can link people to community resources equipped to handle such issues. Call for more information.

CLASS PRESENTATIONS:

When the occasion presents itself, support services are taken into the classroom -with guidance counselors presenting pertinent information regarding such topics as: conflict resolution, career and educational opportunities, college planning, etc.

TESTING:

An integral part of the counseling office services is to organize, administer, and interpret state assessments and college aptitude tests. Parents and/or students concerned about testing results are encouraged to contact a counselor.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES:

Parents suspecting that Special Education Services may be warranted are encouraged to contact the counseling office to initiate the process.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE CONCERNS:

Substance abuse has become a critical problem in the lives of many (including our students). For this reason, a Drug and Alcohol Intervention Specialist is part of our team. In an attempt to curb students' use of drugs or alcohol and increase their success in school, the counselor is available for individual counseling, group counseling, assessments, intervention, and community referals. For help with this sort of matter, contact Mrs. Skipper at 573-7430.

SCHOOL TO WORK:

With "School to Work" educational reform in process, a new service provided by the Yakima Chamber of Commerce can be accessed thru the counseling office. This service includes job shadowing, career internships, and partnerships with local participating organizations. Students receive excellent opportunities to learn relevant job skills and gain first-hand experience in the careers that students hope to pursue. Click on "School to Work" on our homepage for more information.

CLASS SCHEDULES:

Students and their parents are vital to schedule planning. Counselors present credit and course completion information in the classrooms or individually prior to each registration.
