EVHS - NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION PROCESS

The East Valley Chapter of the National Honors Society selection process is as follows:

1. The selection process has been approved by a vote of the faculty council (May 25, 2006) and will be published in the EVHS newsletter.

2. Students' academic records will be reviewed to determine academic eligibility. The EVHS chapter requires a minimum of four completed semesters and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.

3. Students who are academically eligible will be notified and informed that for consideration for selection into NHS, they are required to complete and submit a Student Information Form. Failure to do so in the manner and time frame directed will cause the student to not be considered for selection.

4. All faculty members will be invited to attend a meeting for the purpose of making comments on the candidates. Comments will be given orally without written submissions and will be limited to the four areas of consideration for selection - scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Administration may not attend the meeting or participate in the selection so as to maintain objectivity in the case of an appeal. Faculty members with a family member or close relative in consideration will excuse themselves from the discussion and voting on that particular student.

5. Following review of the Student Activity Information Form, listening to faculty comments, and any other verifiable information about the candidate, the five members of the faculty council will vote upon each candidate for selection. The faculty council will select students who have demonstrated outstanding performance in all four areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

6. Candidates must receive an approval vote from a majority of the five faculty council members. There will be no specific quota or percentage of members per class used to guide selection.

7. Upon approval, students and their parents will be notified in writing, given information regarding the induction ceremony, obligations of membership and requested verification of intent to attend induction and join the chapter.
