WASL ALTERNATE OPTIONS

For students that have yet to meet one or more of the standards on the high school Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), the state has created other options to demonstrate their skills. These options are summarized below.

These options are designed for students who have skills at the level to pass the WASL, but to date have been unable to show proficiency on the state assessment. These alternatives are not intended for students who are still working to gain the skills needed to pass the WASL. The options are as challenging as the WASL test. To be eligible, students must have met attendance requirements, have followed their student learning plan, and have taken the WASL at least one time.

Take the PSAT, SAT or ACT - Math ONLY:
Students may use their math score on college readiness tests to show they have key math skills. The minimum scores are: PSAT - 47; SAT - 470; and ACT - 19.

Compile a "Collection of Evidence":
Students create a set of work samples. The collection will be 8 to 12 pieces, each of which will demonstrate various skills identified in the state essential academic learning targets. The student will keep these completed tasks in a portfolio that will eventually include samples that demonstrate skills of all the essential learning goals for that subject. The final portfolio of collection of work samples will be sent to the state to be scored and determine if the work meets the WASL level of proficiency. Students wishing to compile a COE should contact their Connections coach immediately in order to register. Registration deadline is in Dec.

WASL/Grades Comparison:
The state is determining a formula by which the letter grade of those students that passed the WASL can be compared to the g.p.a. of a student who has not passed the WASL. The EV district will complete the comparison once the formula is finalized and contact any student that qualifies for this option.

WASL FAQ

Q - Can my child still graduate is they do not pass the math section of the WASL?

A- Those juniors and seniors that do not pass the math WASL must fulfill the following two math requirements to meet the math WASL graduation requirement –

Seniors

1. Earn at least one high school level math credit AND

2. Continue to take the test this spring with a legitimate effort that generates a score.

- If senior earns one math credit but does not take the WASL math test, they will not graduate in June.

- It a student takes the WASL math test but does not earn one math credit, they will not graduate in June.

Juniors

1. Earn at least one high school level math credit AND

2. Continue to take the test each year with a legitimate effort that generates a score.

- If a student earns one math credit but does not take the WASL math test in spring, they will have one last chance fulfill this years testing requirement by taking the test this August. If a student does not complete a test in either April or August, they will not graduate unless they were to pass the math portion of the WASL their senior year.

- It a student takes the WASL math test but does not earn one math credit, they will have to earn two math credits their senior year as well as continue to take the WASL math test their senior year.

The math WASL testing dates are April 15 and 16 from 7:50 to 9:50 in the morning.
