Program Overview

East Valley School District’s K–12 Dual Language Program is designed to develop bilingual, biliterate, and academically successful students. This program supports both native Spanish speakers and English speakers in becoming fluent in both languages while meeting high academic standards.

 

Why Dual Language?

Will learning a second language interfere with my child’s English development?

No! Research shows that bilingual students often outperform their peers in English language skills over time.

 

How are students selected for the program?

There is a screening and lottery process to ensure balanced classrooms of native Spanish and English speakers.

 

What about transportation?

Bussing is provided district-wide for students enrolled in the program.
 

How Does the Dual Language Program Work?

Kindergarten & 1st Grade:

  • Students learn to read and write primarily in Spanish

  • Math, science, and social studies are taught in English

  • Dedicated time for English literacy every day

  • Teachers help students make connections between languages and build vocabulary in both

2nd–5th Grade:

  • Instruction is evenly split between English and Spanish across all subjects

  • Students rotate through 4–6 week units, switching between:

    • Spanish Language Arts + Math & Science in English

    • English Language Arts + Math & Science in Spanish

  • Focus on grade-level skills and standards while developing bilingual and biliterate abilities
